Tullio Masserini

  • I tuoi scooter erano in qualche modo elaborati?

Tutti i miei scooter erano elaborati da me in officina.

Mio padre era talmente deluso che andò a riferirlo a Milano direttamente all’Ing. I rallentai mentre lui proseguì a tutto gas mentre rimbalzava in ogni modo. Dopo 300 metri dovette fermarsi perché il mozzo era collassato.

  • Puoi dirmi qualcosa sull’offerta di partecipare all’evento inglese all’Isola di Man?

It still amazes me that after all the people I have met who really have done the history of motorcycling and they tell you it's been nothing exceptional, they have just taken what life and opportunities gave them and ended up playing a very important role in this side of the progress.

  • When did you first got involved with scooters?

My father was an official racer for Gilera and he finished his racing career in 1948 when he won the 'Gran premio delle Nazioni' in Faenza and the day after attended the Sanremo Six Days where has been the only Italian ending up with a Gold medal award. At the end of the year he finished racing also because in 1946 had a nasty accident while he was doing some training and since that he had problems with his back. Innocenti then asked him to join the team what was to go to Monthlery for the record attempts. He accepted the invitation and they asked him what he wanted to be part of it. He simply replied to go, they would have talked about this later, when they were back. As we know the attempt proved to be very successful, more than 30 records had been beaten, so once back Innocenti renovated the question. He replied that ha had been dealing in the textile business all his life, time was to think about his 5 sons, so he said he wanted nothing but the opportunity of starting an Innocenti dealership he would have given to his son Tullio who was only 11 at the time. With a father professional racer and the opportunity of working in a motorscooter shop, Tullio gives up studying and after a few years of struggling with his father where he starts and leaves school regularly, at the age of 14 he starts working full time in the shop. Due to his age, of course his father had put a trusted friend to run the company but at the age of 18 he finally takes in, when the open frame Lambrettas production is close to the end and the Tv 175 S1 is making his appearance.

  • What was the first Lambretta that you rode?

The first scooter that I rode was in 1949 a model A. I remember I nicked it when my father was not watching and had a go on a road on the side of our house. I nearly falled off as the scooter was very rigid and the gravel on the road didn’t help at all.

  • What was the first sports event that you entered?

The first event I entered was a Gimkana in Bergamo in 1951 with a model C. Not a proper competition but these were very popular at the time and there was a lot of people watching also!

  • Have you ever been tempted by the Vespa and have you ever thought of selling them instead of Lambrettas?

As we have seen the Innocenti dealership started fairly by casualty. When I later had the opportunity to ride a Vespa I realized I was much more comfortable on a Lambretta as I really didn’t like the handling of a Vespa. With my experience as an enduro racer offroad you can imagine that really Vespas are not for me, I can say that talking Vespa causes me urticaria.

  • Were your scooter tuned in any way?

All my scooter were tuned by myself I the shop. I didn’t do the work personally but had a trusted mechanic who knew what I wanted. Regulation during events like the Motogiro d’Italia I did on my DL 200 were very strict and you couldn’t change carburettor, exhaust or gearing. I have always been passionated about knowing the correct measures for port tuning, compression ratios and transfers opening so these were the things that we could work on. Fact is that if you tune a cylinder but do not change the carburettor or the exhaust you have limited benefits from a lot work. So we did this and heavily polished the ports, it was a very neat job, you could see yourself like in front of a mirror! It was very realiable also. We also got the flywheel machined to weight 1.9 kgs also by machining down the fins by 30%. The only thing I ever managed to obtain from Innocenti has been to run in the engine in their engine dynos, I asked this as I didn’t have time to run it on the scooter myself. They told me that the power had been increased by my alterations to a remarkable 14 bhp. Other than this I have had no support at all from Innocenti as they didn’t want to get involved in racing. I remember that in the first Motogiro in 1967 Innocenti and Piaggio did an agreement not to take any official role or the competition thing, and relative costs, would have started again. After the Motogiro, that I won I received a telephone call from Fusato who was the director for advertising asking me to bring the scooter to Milan as Ing. Sartori wanted to know how I managed to get 2 extra bhp from it. I said no way. I only agreed to show the scooter in the Innocenti store in Piazza San Babila in Milan but made sure they couldn’t strip it to see what we had done.

  • Was it fitted with an electronic ignition

No this was just before the electronic models made their appearance. And to be honest at the time I wasn’t really happy with the electronic ignitions as sometimes something happened and I didn’t like to remain aside of the road when with points if something was wrong you just filed them a bit and were on the road again. Later we’ve seen that the only electronic models problem was the red box. Today it is completely different you have a variety of electronic ignitions that work well.

  • Were tuning kits avaiable on the market and did you do any tuning work in the shop?

We didn’t much tuning work in the shop, just for close friends’ customers who wanted their Lambretta to go faster but never too much. In 1965-66 the Ancillotti kits became avaiable but I never got involved with them and we never sold them in the shop. We did the basic tuning stuff and made the conversion I didn on my scooters; we could also open up the carb size by 1mm or put bigger pistons in small engine casings models, 125 to 150 and so on. There wasn’t already the mentality for this kind of conversion, people mainly used Lambrettas for everyday commuting. There was someone who tuned their own machines, put bigger carbs, hand made exhausts but they weren’t much.

  • The most memorable race that you entered?

Surely the most memorable and also exhausting one that I have done on a Lambretta 175 has been surely the Valli Bergamasche. This happened in 1963 and I was the only person to take part on a scooter. The is also some footage made by FMI where I am filmed in a ford. I ended up in 47th place and managed to put about 20 motorcycles behind me. Of course I took part in it to arrive at the end, obviously not to win. It was a three days enduro race where the roads were absolutely horrible; today the race enduro in motorways to compare with them. I don’t really know how I managed to get to the end. The Lambretta had been slightly modified for the event with improved front shock absorbers, I had cut and re-welded the upper fixing pivot for the rear shock so the engine had a bigger clearance and under the legshields I had a protector mounted to allow the scooter to slide on rocks and protect the exhaust from the stones. The engine had been slightly tuned as well and I used Continental knobby tyres which were good for the road as well. Even in the Motogiro I used this kind of tyres as this event was 50% on bad roads where they were excellent and were good on the tarmac as well. Also they offered 1 cm more clearance on the exhaust so the exhaust hit the ground less than normal.

  • The most beautiful memory?

Surely the Motogiro. I really enjoyed it. The last race day I always felt I hadn’t had enough. The combination of road and off road was excellent for me as I had been official Gilera enduro racer from 1956 to 1960 when my father told me I had to stop and work full time in the shop. This enabled me to ride with confidence off road but at the same time I had been riding Lambrettas since when I was only 11 so I was very familiar with it. Since that I only did 1 or 2 races a year. At the time we were selling Lambretta and Gilera and also Austin cars so I was very busy with my business. When British Leyland took over they also gave me the dealership for Morris, Triumph, Jaguar and I also have been one of the first importers for Honda motorcycles in 1969. From 1973 until 1978 I have also been importer for DKW.

  • The worst memory?

Not much really. Only that I had to retire for a broken crankshaft during the historical Motogiro of 1990. There were only 30 – 40 kms to the end of the race but I saw the flywheel was moving freely so I realized there was nothing I could do.

  • Did you remain in touch with the Lambretta riders of the period?

The only persons I have been in touch after that period has been Cesarino Bartolini of Bologna who in the late 80s started a rally called ‘Lambretta day’ held in his home town, Savigno and Bruno Apolloni who has had some important assignment in the FMI until not long ago. I remember other names like Argilli, Sicbaldi but I have never heard from them since.

  • Have you had moments of technical problems over the years?

We have had big problems when the model E has been introduced in the market. It was in 1954 and that year our sales figures dropped from 1500 to 900. This model had a lot of weak points and when sales drop this much climbing the hill again is very hard. Problems were with the rope to start the engine, the ignition initially was a mess and the front forks had weak springs that used to break. The whole scooter was badly engineered and it also had been assembled in a way that felt apart easily. My father was very disappointed for this so he went to Milan to report to Ing. Innocenti who asked if he was willing to say the same in front of the engineed who had designed it. My father said no problem so they went down and had a good chat with him. After this they did what was going to be one of the best Lambrettas, surely the best of the open frame ones: the D 150 and the reason is that they did a pre-series run of 20 scooters. They gave them to the more faithful  dealers, we had four and said we had to abuse them in every way and then we had to send them back to Milan. So we did they did the improvements that were needed and put it into production; it’s been one of the stronger, trustable and well engineered Lambrettas ever. Another weak point of all Lambrettas was the rear hub. All models had problems with them. I remember during a Motogiro event an English rider overtook me (Nevile Frost I have reminded him as I read the story in an old scooter magazine) in a straight road full of big hole. I carefully slowed down while he went straight jumping everywhere on at full speed. After 300 meters he had to stop with the rear hub collapsed.

  • Did you ever had any moment of real danger while racing?

I had a very danger moment during the Valli Bergamasche in 1963. On top of the Bresolana Pass there’s a place called ‘Fall of the spouses’ because a legend says that in ancient times two sposes felt off there. In this place there’s a path large enough for one motorcycle only. In a bend I lost control of the rear wheel, probably I had acceletated too much, and I found myself with half scooter on 200 meters precipice. I then thought I had to jump off the scooter and leave it to its destiny, so I did. For much of my surprise the scooter remained in the same position and I with the help of some marshals I managed to put it on the path again and continue to race. That was a very scary moment though.

  • Any particular memories?

I was a ‘Fiamme Oro’ rider and I remember during one edition of the Motogiro with my other friends in the team we did a big battle on this twisty road before arriving in Taranto. I was riding a Lambretta, they were riding motorcycles one I remember had an Aermacchi, another had a Moto Morini 175, another had an MV and so on. They overtook me then I overtook them and I remember once arrived in Taranto they told me I was had to be mad to ride the Lambretta that way. I said it wasn’t me mad but it was their fault as they were slow! I really enjoyed riding the Lambretta and also remember a Vespa top racer named Bertini who was starting just before me. I regularly arrived on him who had big problems balancing his Vespa on white roads so he had to ride with his feet down. I had no problems riding with them on the floorboards, my Lambretta was perfectly balanced. He asked me how did I manage to ride without problem so once I let him ride my Lambretta for a few miles. As I left on the Vespa I thought this men were heroes as you just couldn’t handle them on this kind of roads. It was a 180 and was pretty quick but you could not ride it with confidence. When we exchanged scooters again he had to tell me there was a big difference riding the Lambretta on the gravel.

  • The most beautiful place you’ve seen?

There is a place famous for the lentils, close to Campo Imperatore. You arrive in this small village on top of a hill and you see all this land beneath you with no houses in sight and just two roads crossing the country. It was breathtaking. Normally anyway you always were in a rush and didn’t have much time to look around.

  • Did you receive any decoration for your activity?

I have been given the Silver and Gold stars from Coni and I have been named ‘Cavaliere della Repubblica’

  • Your favourite Lambretta?

My DL 200 for sure, it was the best. Every year I did the Motogiro on a scooter modified for the event and then I sold it. Also the DL had been sold after the race to a friend but I managed to put my hands on it again and used it on the historical races I have done during the last 20 years. He had a wood leg so I had to put the rear brake lever on the left. If you look at it now I have put the brake lever in its original place but I have left the hole in the legshields.

  • Can you tell me anything about the offer you received to attend the English event in the Isle of Man?

I have been offered to be part of the Italian team two or three times by Dr. Candelo of the Lambretta Club of Italy. I would have really liked to attend them but I was very busy and couldn’t stay away from the business all the time that it would have taken. I read the articles in the newspapers and to be honest I also regretted but I really couldn’t go. As I am very competitive I also thought that the English riders would have made the idea that I wasn’t going because I was scared of competing with them in their own Country. But it was only a matter of time.

  • Can you tell me about your experience at an enduro race with the LUI 75?

This happened in Garmish 6 days in Germany. When I won the 1969 edition of the Motogiro, Innocenti had loads of unsold new LUI machines. Reason was they said that it was too futuristic but this was not true. So they were in the need of something weird to advertise them. I had already entered the race with the Gilera and from my experience told them that if I had to encouter only one day of bad weather I should have stopped as I wouldn’t have been able to go on with the LUI in that particolar muddy track. They asked me to try so I did but the day before the start it rained heavily so I have been able to complete only day one and a lot of the 300 or so kms that I did were done pushing the scoot so I arrived at the finish line too late and wasn’t allowed to start the following day. I remember during the day the LUI was falling apart, even the steering suffered a loose nut and at the end of a road going down I was turning the steering but the wheel still was going straight so I also had to stop to fix the problem with what I had with me. Trouble was that I hadn’t had time to try the scooter so basically I used it for the first time during the day and realized it hadn’t been prepared as it should.

  • When did you finished racing?

I have raced from time to time until a couple of years ago. In recent years I have entered the Championship for historical motorcycles, 8 events during the year that I have won with both Gilera and Lambretta and a number of historical Motogiro d’Italia andother similar events.

I have met a proud man who has done a brilliant career in both sport and business, he has shared with patience his memories and impressive and perfectly kept documentation. He is relaxing after a life full of success spending his time between Bergamo and a house in France. Indeed you make your life what it is like.
